With the global pandemic situation getting worse, what is the future of already planned MCU phase 4

COVID-19 pandemic is still not under control, and the situation is getting worse day by day. With people struggling to spend their time indoors, new content is scarce on OTT platforms. The shooting of movies and TV series is on hold, and production houses are closed. The world is now trying to return to work with all the possible precautions, and some productions might resume shooting soon. Being an MCU enthusiast, I will talk mostly about the planned Phase 4 announced at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2019.

MCU is known for its detail-oriented movies and connected story-lines. Marvel’s MCU has aced this genre with its better planning, but the pandemic is changing everything.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Disney+ miniseries was scheduled to premiere in August 2020. Due to COVID-19 pandemic filming of the series was halted in March in Prague, Czech Republic. Sebastian Stan confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that there was some filming left. He estimated two to three weeks, but it could be more if we include post-production, re-shoots and other stuff. If the filming starts in the next few weeks, then also we can assume that it won’t come out until November. The series was supposed to come out after Black Widow. Since the Black Widow is now dropping on (no pun intended) November 6, 2020, kicking off MCU Phase 4, TFATWS will come out not before December. There is no official word on this, and this is just what fans are speculating.

Next in the line is The Eternals which is going to introduce a whole new Team of Superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We will see Kit Harington in a new avatar after the HBO epic series Game of Thrones. The filming of The Eternals wrapped in February and some of the VFX work is going on remotely. The movie will hit theaters on February 12, 2021.

After The Eternals, next release is WandaVision. WandaVision is another Disney+ miniseries. The filming wrap party happened on March 1. Fans are hoping that Marvels might release WandaVision before Eternals or TFATWS in November or December since it might complete production before them. But if Marvels want to keep its original release timeline, then WandaVision might get shifted after The Eternals February release.

WandaVision ties up to the story of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which will hit theaters on March 25, 2022. All the more reason to believe that WandaVision won’t be available for streaming on Disney+ in 2020.

‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ intended to be the 3rd film in the MCU Phase 4 starring Simu Liu. The movie will release in May 2021. Disney+ Series of Hawkeye and Loki are still far away.

Considering the current situation where COVID-19 cases are increasing exponentially, Warner Bros. has once again moved the theatrical release of Tenet. The movie will now open on August 12. Disney has also shifted Mulans’s date for the third time. The new release date for Mulan is August 21.

Movie theaters might open soon, but people won’t feel safe going there until there are some strict precautions like mandatory masks for everyone. They might have to keep some seats empty to maintain social distancing, which will affect their business. Whatever happens, the movie experience is going to change. I love movies, and I love MCU. I can’t wait to go to theaters and cheer out loud with the fellow audience on moments like Captain America lifting Thor’s hammer. But I won’t feel safe going to theaters until we have a vaccine. Will you?
